What is paintball?

Paintball is a competitive recreational sport in which players use air-powered markers to shoot breakable paintballs at opposing players or designated targets. Games can involve elimination, capturing objectives, defending positions, or completing scenario-based missions.

Rules and game formats vary between fields, but players normally wear protective masks and follow strict safety procedures while games are active.

What are the basic rules of paintball?

Paintball rules vary by field and game type, but the basic idea is usually the same: players who are hit by a paintball that breaks on them or their equipment are eliminated from that round.

Players must keep their masks on in active playing areas, follow field boundaries, obey referees, and use barrel covers or other required safety equipment outside the playing field. Fields may have additional rules for surrendering, minimum shooting distances, firing modes, and acceptable marker velocity.

What age do you have to be to play paintball?

There is no single minimum age that applies to every paintball field. Each field sets its own age requirements, and younger players may be offered low-impact paintball instead of standard paintball.

Some locations also require a parent or guardian to sign a waiver for players under 18. Check the rules of the specific field before booking.

Is paintball expensive?

It depends on how often you play. An occasional rental session can be relatively affordable because the field normally supplies the marker, mask, tank, and other basic equipment.

Costs increase if you play regularly because paintballs, field admission, air fills, maintenance, and personal equipment become recurring expenses.

Is paintball good exercise?

Yes. Recreational paintball can involve running, crouching, crawling, changing direction, carrying equipment, and repeatedly moving between cover.

The intensity varies considerably depending on the game format and playing style. A slow woodsball game may involve moderate activity, while competitive speedball can be physically demanding.

Is paintball an Olympic sport?

No. Paintball is played recreationally and competitively around the world, but it is not currently an Olympic sport and is not among the new sports approved for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic program.

When was paintball invented?

The first widely recognized recreational paintball game took place in 1981 in New Hampshire. The players used marking pistols that had originally been developed for purposes such as marking livestock and trees.

The activity gradually developed into an organized recreational and competitive sport with purpose-built markers, protective equipment, fields, leagues, and tournaments.

What does getting hit by a paintball feel like?

A paintball hit usually feels like a quick, sharp sting. The sensation can vary depending on where you are hit, your clothing, the distance of the shot, and the velocity of the paintball.

Hits can sometimes leave temporary red marks, welts, or bruises, particularly on exposed or lightly covered areas.

How can you make paintball hurt less?

Wear comfortable clothing that covers exposed skin and consider protective equipment such as gloves, padded pants, knee pads, elbow pads, a neck protector, or a padded shirt.

Distance also matters. Follow field rules and avoid playing with markers that have not been properly chronographed. Paintball marker manufacturers commonly specify a maximum velocity of 300 feet per second, while individual fields may require lower limits.

What should you wear for your first time playing paintball?

Wear long pants, a long-sleeved shirt, and closed-toe athletic footwear with good grip. Choose clothes that allow you to run, crouch, and move comfortably.

Gloves are useful for protecting your hands, and many players also wear lightweight padding over areas such as the knees, elbows, chest, or neck. Avoid excessively thick clothing that makes movement difficult or causes overheating.

Should you wear a cup for paintball?

A protective athletic cup is optional, but it can provide useful protection for male players. Paintball-specific padded shorts can also provide additional protection around the groin, hips, and thighs.

Whatever protection you choose should fit securely without significantly restricting movement.

How many paintballs do you need for a game?

It depends heavily on your playing style and the type of game. A careful recreational player may use only a few hundred paintballs during several games, while aggressive players and speedball players can shoot considerably more.

Five hundred paintballs can be enough for a recreational session if you shoot selectively, but there is no fixed amount that suits every player.

What is the difference between paintball and airsoft?

Paintball uses larger breakable projectiles filled with visible marking material, while airsoft normally uses small solid plastic or biodegradable BBs.

Paintball hits are often easier to confirm because the projectile can leave a visible mark. Airsoft typically relies more heavily on players acknowledging their own hits. The equipment, protective requirements, game styles, projectile sizes, and effective shooting characteristics also differ.

What are paintballs made of?

Traditional paintballs have a thin, breakable shell, commonly made from gelatin or a similar biodegradable material, surrounding a water-soluble colored filling.

Exact materials vary by manufacturer. Paintball fill is designed to create a visible mark when the shell breaks rather than behave like conventional household paint.

Are paintballs toxic?

Paintballs intended for recreational play are generally made with non-toxic ingredients, but that does not make them food. They should not be deliberately eaten or used for anything other than their intended purpose.

Formulations vary between manufacturers, so the product packaging or manufacturer information is the best source for details about a particular paintball.

What size are paintballs?

The most common paintball size is .68 caliber, meaning the ball is approximately 0.68 inches in diameter.

Other sizes exist, particularly .50 caliber, which is commonly associated with lower-impact paintball. Markers, barrels, magazines, and paintballs need to be compatible with the caliber being used.

Are all paintballs the same size?

No. Although .68 caliber is the standard used by most conventional paintball equipment, other calibers exist.

Even paintballs sold as the same caliber can vary slightly in actual diameter because of manufacturing tolerances, storage conditions, temperature, and humidity.

How should paintballs be stored?

Keep paintballs sealed in their original bags and store them in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.

Avoid leaving them for long periods in hot vehicles, damp environments, or places with major temperature changes. Poor storage can cause paintballs to swell, shrink, become misshapen, or turn brittle.

What are First Strike paintballs?

First Strike rounds are shaped paintball projectiles rather than conventional spherical paintballs. Their aerodynamic shape and fin-stabilized design are intended to provide improved consistency and range.

They require compatible paintball equipment, and not every marker, magazine, barrel, or playing field allows them.

What is reball in paintball?

Reball uses reusable projectiles instead of paint-filled paintballs. They are generally used for practice or indoor training because they do not break and release paint when they hit something.

Because the projectiles can be collected and used again, reball can reduce the amount of disposable paint required during repetitive training.

Will paintballs wash out of clothes?

Most modern paintball fill is water-soluble and normally washes out of ordinary washable clothing.

Wash paintball clothing reasonably soon after playing and follow the garment’s normal care instructions. Some fabrics or surfaces may stain more easily than others, so clothing you do not mind getting dirty is still the safest choice.

What are the different types of paintball guns?

Paintball markers can be divided into several broad categories.

Pump markers require manual cycling between shots. Mechanical markers use mechanical components to fire without electronic trigger control. Electronic markers use electronics and a solenoid to control firing. Magazine-fed markers feed paintballs from detachable magazines instead of a conventional hopper.

Some markers fit into more than one category.

What are “eyes” on a paintball gun?

Paintball marker eyes are electronic sensors located around the breech. They detect whether a paintball is correctly positioned before the marker fires.

Their main purpose is to help prevent the bolt from moving forward before the paintball is completely loaded, reducing the chance of chopping or breaking paint inside the marker.

Can a CO2 paintball gun use compressed air?

Some can, but compatibility depends on the marker.

Many older mechanical markers can operate on either CO2 or compressed air, while numerous modern markers are designed specifically for compressed air. Some manufacturers explicitly state that particular markers must not use CO2. For example, Planet Eclipse specifies compressed air only for the EMF100.

Always check the marker’s manual before changing air systems.

How should you maintain a paintball marker?

Basic maintenance usually involves cleaning paint and debris from the marker and barrel, inspecting seals and O-rings, and lubricating the parts specified by the manufacturer.

Different markers have different maintenance requirements. Use only the type and amount of lubricant recommended in the owner’s manual, and degas the marker before performing maintenance that requires disassembly.

Paintball Air Tanks

What are paintball tanks filled with?

Paintball markers generally use either compressed air or carbon dioxide (CO2).

Compressed-air systems are often called HPA, meaning high-pressure air. The correct type of gas depends on the marker and tank being used.

Is CO2 or compressed air better for paintball?

Compressed air is generally more consistent because its performance is less affected by temperature changes. It is also the required air source for many modern paintball markers.

CO2 remains compatible with some older and entry-level markers, but its pressure behavior changes more significantly with temperature. The manufacturer’s specifications should determine which system you use.

Where can you fill a paintball air tank?

Paintball fields and paintball stores commonly provide HPA or CO2 filling services. Some sporting-goods or compressed-gas businesses may also offer compatible fills.

Only use a filling station that is designed for the specific type and pressure rating of your cylinder.

Can you fill a paintball tank with a normal air compressor?

A normal household or workshop air compressor cannot directly fill a typical HPA paintball tank because paintball cylinders operate at much higher pressures.

High-pressure cylinders should be filled using appropriate equipment by people trained to handle compressed-gas systems. Paintball equipment manuals specifically warn that improper filling or handling of pressurized cylinders can cause serious injury and state that cylinders should be filled by properly trained personnel.

What is hydrostatic testing on a paintball tank?

Hydrostatic testing is a pressure test used to verify that a compressed-gas cylinder is still structurally safe to use.

Paintball tanks normally have manufacturing and testing information marked on the cylinder. Requalification requirements depend on the cylinder specification, material, age, and applicable regulations, so you should follow the markings on the tank rather than assuming every cylinder uses the same testing interval.

In the United States, cylinder requalification is performed by facilities approved for the relevant testing methods.

How can you tell if a paintball tank is expired?

Check the identification markings and dates printed or stamped on the cylinder. These indicate when it was manufactured or last requalified.

Whether another test is required depends on the tank’s specification and applicable rules. If the markings are unclear or you are uncertain about the cylinder’s status, have it inspected by a qualified paintball air technician or cylinder requalifier before filling it.

Paintball Masks and Protection

How do you stop a paintball mask from fogging?

A dual-pane thermal lens is one of the most effective ways to reduce fogging. Good ventilation and keeping the inside of the lens clean also help control moisture buildup.

Use only cleaning products or anti-fog treatments that are suitable for your particular lens. Avoid wiping the inside of a wet lens aggressively because some thermal lenses and anti-fog coatings can be damaged.

Can you use an airsoft mask for paintball?

Do not assume an airsoft mask is suitable for paintball simply because it covers your eyes and face.

Paintball impacts and safety requirements are different. Use a mask system specifically rated and intended for paintball, and follow the requirements of the field where you are playing.

What gear do you need to play paintball?

The essential equipment is a paintball marker, approved paintball mask, compatible air tank, loader or magazine, paintballs, and a barrel-blocking device.

Most commercial fields provide the core equipment with rental packages. Personal items such as gloves, protective clothing, pods, pod packs, knee pads, elbow pads, and additional padding are optional but can improve comfort and convenience.

Are paintball masks supposed to cover your whole face?

A proper paintball mask is designed to protect the eyes and important areas of the face while still providing enough ventilation, visibility, and comfort for active play.

Players should not substitute ordinary glasses, sunglasses, ski goggles, or basic workshop eye protection for a paintball mask. The mask should remain securely in place whenever you are in an active playing area.
